The Golan Heights is a region on the border of Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. Originally part of Syria, it was captured by Israel in 1967. Over 130 000 people have been displaced and deprived of the right to their own land ever since. Those who stayed were forced to assimilate. Residents of the region live in the shadow of war that has been raging on in Syria. Flashes and sounds of explosions have become a staple of the landscape while uniformed services patrol every village road. This is where Adnan, a middle-aged man and a doctor without a diploma, lives. Although he’s been disinherited, he spends his days in his father’s orchard which he tries to save from freezing with unusual methods. He rarely visits his own home where his wife and daughter are waiting for him. He prefers the company of booze. Because of his way of life, he loses respect of his family and neighbours. One night Andan asks his friends a question: “What would you do if someone from the other side of the border fence asked you for help?”. He already knows the answer because he’s about to help a seriously wounded soldier from Syria and thus shake the local community. Ameer Gakher Eldin’s debut is a deeply moving portrayal of people stripped of their roots by war. It’s a tale about those who were made migrants despite never leaving their homes. And finally, it’s a story of a man deprived of identity but not humanity. The film was a Palestinian submission for the Academy Award.
