Whether it’s a stereotype or not, in Greece the apocalypse seems to happen in a calm, drowsy, or even idle way. Perhaps if Howard Philips Lovecraft had had the chance to bask in the Greek sun and eat olives, his monsters with thousands of tentacles wouldn’t have been so keen on world dominance. And although the classic American writer’s work is present in the film only superficially, since mysterious monsters attacking the Greek shore look like taken from the pages of his books, it’s an intriguing starting point to juxtapose a nihilistic murmur with a life-affirming war cry. People defending the harbour town from the creatures include both locals and tourists, among which there are a local bodybuilder and a sailor looking for his father. They resemble characters of Kaurismäki and Anderson. The whole film has a retro vibe that fits such strange stories perfectly, both on a narrative and visual level. Before there’s any invasion, we are guided through the holiday landscape, accompanied by bazooka.
