Nawal’s husband death marks the beginning of the woman’s problems. According to inheritance laws, a woman can’t inherit anything until she gives birth to a son. And Nawal has only a daughter. She decides to pretend she’s pregnant to deceive a judge and her brother-in-law. She can keep up the lie only for so long, though: time will eventually reveal the truth, even if Nawal manages to fake her pregnancy test. Nawal doesn’t give up and fights for herself and her daughter while supporting her wealthy employer’s daughter in her own private drama. Amjad Al Rasheed’s feature directorial debut had its premiere during the Critics’ Week in Cannes. It’s a slow burner built on delicate psychological nuances, thus resembling the works of Iranian masters, particularly Asghar Farhadi and the duet Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha (“Ballad of a White Cow” and “My Favourite Cake”). “Inshallah A Boy” with laboratory precision depicts the situation where deceased or unborn men have more rights than living and breathing women.
